Vaughan receives federal and regional funding to help support active transportation

The City of Vaughan's active transportation network – from sidewalks and bike lanes, to multi-use pathways and recreational trails – continues to grow in part because of support from other levels of government.

Today, the City announced new cycling facilities coming to Jane Street thanks to a $9.6-million contribution from the Government of Canada’s Active Transportation Fund. York Region has also committed $3.2 million in funding towards this project, known as the Jane Street Uptown Link. The total project cost is $16 million, which includes the City’s contribution of $3.2 million.

The Active Transportation Fund is investing $400 million over five years to expand and enhance active transportation networks across Canada to make travel by active transportation easier, safer, more convenient, and more enjoyable, in support of Canada's National Active Transportation Strategy. To mark the start of this initiative, the City held a media event earlier today with Mayor Steven Del Duca, Members of Council and other dignitaries in attendance.

Once complete, the Jane Street Uptown Link will include eight kilometres of new in-boulevard cycle tracks (designated spaces for bike riders separated from those walking or driving that are marked with a bicycle symbol, arrow and diamond), four kilometres of new sidewalks and four kilometres of streetlight enhancements along Jane Street, from Highway 7 to Teston Road.

The first phase of this project will include work along Jane Street, from Highway 7 to Major Mackenzie Drive, with construction anticipated to begin in June 2024. The second phase will include the construction for the remainder of Jane Street, from Major Mackenzie Drive to Teston Road, in 2025.

Identified in the City’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan, these new cycle tracks will be open for use in 2026. They will offer connections to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, Vaughan Mills, Canada’s Wonderland and more than 500 businesses along Jane Street.

Advancing active transportation options is a priority for the City. In 2023, more than 125 kilometres of active transportation infrastructure at different stages of study, design and implementation progressed in Vaughan through municipal, regional and partner projects. Some of these projects include adding more than 11 kilometres of new cycle tracks and multi-use pathways, and updating 29 kilometres of existing multi-use pathways with new pavement markings and signage.

QUOTES

“The City of Vaughan is committed to supporting active, accessible and sustainable travel options that provide our residents with many options to get around Vaughan. That is precisely what building an interconnected city of the future is all about. The Jane Street Uptown Link Project will include new active transportation facilities along Jane Street from Highway 7 to Teston Road. The new in-boulevard cycle tracks, sidewalk and street enhancements will improve safety and accessibility, making Jane Street an ideal cycling corridor. I want to express my appreciation to the federal government and York Region for investing in this important project. We all understand the critical need to expand transit options to tackle traffic gridlock, and, by working together, we will continue to ensure Vaughan keeps moving.”

- Mayor Steven Del Duca

“Vaughan’s multi-use paths, tracks, lanes, routes and trails bring our community together. As a growing city, building active, accessible, affordable and sustainable transit options will support more people to get where they want to go, while protecting our environment. The improvements to Jane Street will make it safer and more inclusive for everyone and encourage more people to ride, roll, cycle, walk, and run.”

- Francesco Sorbara, Member of Parliament for Vaughan—Woodridge, on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities

“On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, we extend our appreciation to the Government of Canada for their continued support of the health, safety and well-being of our communities. Active transportation and traveller safety are key priorities for Regional Council, with specific pedestrian and cycling measures outlined in the multi-year York Region Vision Zero Traveller Safety Plan. By investing in the Jane Street Cycle Track and Sidewalk project, the Government of Canada joins York Region and the City of Vaughan in our commitment to protect our most vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, seniors and children.”

- Wayne Emmerson, Chairman and CEO, The Regional Municipality of York
