200 trees planted with funding from Tree Canada

The City of Vaughan’s urban forest – the trees we enjoy throughout the community in our yards, parks, ravines and more – is growing!

Today, a special event was held to plant 200 trees in North Maple Regional Park thanks to a $10,000 grant from Tree Canada. Mayor Steven Del Duca, Members of Council, City staff, community volunteers and representatives from Tree Canada were on hand to help out.

These trees will be enjoyed for generations to come, providing oxygen, improving mental and physical health, and offering habitats, food and other resources for many animal species.

Tree planting initiatives further strengthen the City’s commitment to environmental sustainability and developing our tree canopy, as outlined in the Urban Forest Management Plan (PDF). Vaughan’s vision is for a healthy, growing and sustainable urban forest canopy that supports biodiversity, human health, recreation and community resilience. As part of this plan, the City also developed the Woodland Management Strategy (PDF) to guide the management of all City-owned woodlands.

QUOTE

“We’re growing our urban forest, one tree at a time! I was pleased to roll up my sleeves and join my Council colleagues and dedicated volunteers today to plant 200 trees at North Maple Regional Park. It’s one of the many ways we’re taking action to ensure Vaughan continues to be a green city for future generations. I want to extend a big thank you to Tree Canada and our partners at the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority for their generous contribution and continued support. I also want to recognize our hard-working staff from the Parks, Forestry and Horticulture Operations department who go above and beyond to protect our trees and maintain Vaughan’s beauty.”

–      Mayor Steven Del Duca
