Elena Gallucci was presented with a Civic Hero Award for her commitment to improving the quality of life in her community, and for her success in raising money and awareness in the fight against cancer.
Elena Gallucci - Ward 2 Civic Hero Award, 2008
In April of 2002, Mrs. Gallucci was diagnosed with leukemia. While fighting this disease, she became involved in fundraising efforts on behalf of Princess Margaret Hospital. While still in hospital, she befriended and supported others who were also suffering from various forms of leukemia.
In her name, friends and family got together and created the Gift of Life Walk. The annual event at the Kortright Centre attracted hundreds of walkers and, over the years, has raised over $650,000 for the Princess Margaret Hospital. As a role model and in recognition of her efforts, Princess Margaret has often asked Mrs. Gallucci to act as a media spokesperson.
"Mrs. Gallucci is a positive role model for the entire community," said Ward 2 Councillor Tony Carella, who nominated Elena Ruggero Gallucci for the award. "She embodies the struggle of a young mother with personal courage who is able to reach out to others in need. Mrs. Gallucci is not just fighting cancer for herself, but for countless others and that makes her a Civic Hero in the truest sense."
