Ms. Bun served on the Thornhill Secondary School Board of Student Senators, the York Region President's Council and the Ontario Student Trustees' Association. She also served as a Student Trustee with the York Region District School Board in order to represent the voice of youth throughout York Region as the liaison between the school board and its students.

In 2009, she was nominated for the Citizenship Award Nominee at Thornhill Secondary School in recognition of her volunteer work on student council.

"Maria is setting an example for other students to follow with her volunteer work at school and in the broader community," said Ward 4 Councillor Sandra Yeung Racco, who nominated Ms. Bun for the award. "In her capacity as a student trustee, she is helping to engage students in the democratic process, as well as educating them on civic duty. Having worked with Maria in various capacities, I can confidently say that Maria has already made a difference at her young age, and she will continue to make a difference because of her love to help others."

Ms. Bun also served as Executive Vice President and Youth Committee Chair of the Thornhill Provincial Liberal Association, and President of the Thornhill Young Liberals. In addition to her political volunteerism, Maria also served as Executive Member with the Social Justice League and a Literacy Partner with Community Living.
