Speed Limit Policy
Vaughan is implementing a comprehensive Speed Limit Policy across the city to ensure the safety of all road users and address the growing population.
As part of the City’s MoveSmart Mobility Management Strategy, the policy is used as a speed management tool to set and adjust appropriate speed limits throughout Vaughan's street network.
Council approved the policy on June 22, 2021 (PDF), and implementation began in summer 2021.
School zone areas changed from 50 to 40 kilometres per hour, public laneways changed from 50 to 30 kilometres per hour and select neighbourhood areas will change from 50 to 40 kilometres per hour.
Speed limit changes, including installation of new signage, were completed:
- in school zone areas (PDF) as of September 2021
- on public laneways (PDF) as of December 2021
- in five select neighbourhood areas (PDF) (one within each ward) as of September 2022
- in five select neighbourhood areas (PDF) and 15 City roadways (PDF) as of September 2023
In summer 2024, speed limits will be reduced in six neighbourhood areas (PDF) and along 15 City roadways (PDF).
