The City of Vaughan is introducing you to some of the teams that work hard to support the residents and businesses that call this vibrant community home! Today, we’re sharing everything to know about Wastewater Services and Stormwater Services.

The Wastewater and Stormwater Services team is part of the Environmental Services department within the Public Works portfolio. This office goes above and beyond to provide the community with front-line services to maintain and enhance our roads, parks, forests, waterways and more. They work around the clock to contribute to the high quality of life in our growing city.

So, what does this team do?

The Wastewater and Stormwater Services team is responsible for monitoring and maintaining infrastructure for the collection of wastewater and management of stormwater.

Stormwater Services

The Wastewater and Stormwater Services team operates and maintains the City’s intricate stormwater system, which includes approximately 1,000 kilometres of storm sewers and 22,000 catch basins, more than 150 stormwater management ponds and more than 150 kilometres of a natural creek system.

Staff regularly inspect and maintain Vaughan’s vital stormwater infrastructure to ensure the system remains effective. Inspections are important to proactively detect maintenance needs and identify preventative infrastructure repairs to protect residents, homes and the environment from contaminants and erosion.

Wastewater Services

The Wastewater and Stormwater Services team is also responsible for monitoring and maintaining infrastructure to collect and convey wastewater. The City’s extensive wastewater collection network includes approximately 1,000 kilometres of wastewater sewers, more than 16,000 maintenance holes, 12 sewage pumping stations and more.

Our highly trained crews perform routine and preventive maintenance activities across the City, such as inspections, repairs, flushing and cleaning of wastewater sewers, maintenance holes, sewage pumping stations and other critical infrastructure. This work ensures exceptional service delivery and keeps the system operating efficiently and effectively.

The Wastewater and Stormwater Services team keeps Service Excellence at the forefront of everything they do, especially when responding to service requests, emergencies and inquiries from residents.

As Environmental Sustainability is a City priority in the 2022-2026 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan, the Wastewater and Stormwater Services team plays a critical role in educating the public on best practices for protecting Vaughan’s waterways. These practices include tips on where to safely dispose of pool water, fats, oils, grease and water from washing vehicles, how to prevent hazardous material spills, and what the City does to manage spills on public property.
