Mayor Bevilacqua welcomes Provincial commitment to build Yonge North Subway Extension
Project will provide additional transportation options for Vaughan citizens
Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement in response to the Provincial government’s announcement that it will invest in building the Yonge North Subway Extension.
“The City of Vaughan has been a strong supporter of the Yonge North Subway Extension and today our voices were heard.
“Today, the Ford government introduced a $28.5-billion transit plan which includes a $5.6-billion investment to build the Yonge Subway Extension (YSE). This project is critical to those who live, work and commute in Vaughan, and I am encouraged to see that the Province recognizes its importance.
“Commuters in Vaughan, York Region and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) can look forward to greater access to transit and reduced travel times as this critical transit link will better connect our community to an expanding regional transportation network while also driving economic opportunities along the Yonge Street corridor.
“The City of Vaughan is experiencing, first-hand, the positive benefits of having a subway in the heart of our new downtown, the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC). The VMC Subway continues to be a catalyst for creating jobs, attracting investments and stimulating city-building opportunities.
“Today’s announcement adds to an already impressive list of transit initiatives that will help our citizens move more efficiently throughout the GTA and beyond. The Highway 427 expansion north to Major Mackenzie Drive is well underway; the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Mobility Hub – located in our city’s exciting new downtown – seamlessly integrates walking, biking and transit into a sustainable multi-modal hub in the heart of our city; improvements are being made to the Maple and Rutherford GO stations; and work on York Region’s Bus Rapid Transit network continues in our city.”
