Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua has issued the following statement.

“On behalf of the City of Vaughan, our thoughts and prayers are with our neighbours, the people of Toronto, following the deadly van attack that took place at Yonge Street and Finch Avenue. We offer our sincerest condolences to the families and friends who had loved ones taken away so suddenly and tragically. We mourn with all of you in this time of profound grief and sorrow.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the men and women whose injuries are being treated by dedicated doctors, nurses and hospital staff. We take great comfort in knowing that those in need are being cared for by compassionate and tireless health care professionals. We hope that they make a full recovery and can move on from this horrific tragedy.

“I wish to further recognize the brave first responders who without hesitation responded to the call of duty, raced to the scene, brought about calm and order and helped ensure there were no further victims. In the weeks and months ahead, men and women in uniform will work endlessly on behalf of all victims to pursue and ensure justice.

“Communities across Canada and the world have been shaken by this senseless act of violence. I strongly condemn this cowardly behaviour on innocent people. Now more than ever, we must be resilient and come together as fellow citizens. In the face of adversity, let us always remember to serve and support one another through genuine acts of kindness, peace and tolerance.

“Vaughan stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Toronto. I have requested that flags be lowered to half-staff at City Hall and all associated City facilities, including parks and fire stations. People are encouraged to share their condolences, and personal messages of love and comfort by sharing messages on the City’s online condolence page: https://a.pgtb.me/XjrQzc.”
