Only rain down the drain!
Fallen leaves may be pretty, but they can cause flooding when covering catch basins on rainy days. These drains collect stormwater and carry it through storm sewers to local waterways, helping to keep Vaughan’s roads clear of pooling water. This is why it’s crucial for the resident living closest to the catch basin to regularly clear it of leaves and other debris, especially before a rainfall or thunderstorm.
There are approximately 22,000 catch basins in Vaughan which are critical in keeping stormwater moving. These drainage systems need to be regularly maintained to keep the city’s water clean and safe, and to avoid flooding. You can help to protect Vaughan’s drinking water by preventing yard waste, such as twigs and leaves, food, chemicals and other debris from going into catch basins.

The City of Vaughan’s approach to managing stormwater protects the environment, property and water quality and aligns with the City’s focus on environmental stewardship, a priority in the Council-approved 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan. The City’s stormwater system currently includes more than 1,000 kilometres of pipes, approximately 22,000 catch basins, more than 150 stormwater management ponds and over 150 kilometres of natural creek system. Maintenance of the City's stormwater infrastructure ensures water continues to flow now and for generations to come.
