Your safety and well-being is our priority. That’s why the City of Vaughan remains committed to working with York Regional Police (YRP), other organizations and all levels of government to keep our community safe.

Under the leadership of Mayor Steven Del Duca and Vaughan’s Regional Councillors, the City has increased investment in YRP to help combat violent crime and auto theft, and to help support programs such as Operation Auto Guard, which saw 56 people arrested and charged with more than 250 criminal offences, and the newly launched Operation Auto Guard 2.0.

Mayor Del Duca has written to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Canada’s Minister of Public Safety urging for a collaborative approach across all levels of government to keep dangerous offenders off our streets and to address auto thefts in Vaughan and across York Region.

As well, the City is distributing key fob protective bags to Vaughan residents to help prevent auto theft. They are being given out one per person on a first-come-first-serve basis at City community centres and at the service desk at Vaughan City Hall. Visit the City’s key fob protective bag webpage for more information.

Thanks to efforts like these, Vaughan has seen a dramatic decline in auto theft – a more than 30 per cent reduction in incidents so far in 2024 compared to this time last year. Progress is being made with more advocacy to come.

Mayor Del Duca and Members of the Council will continue to push for more funding for YRP to ensure an even stronger presence in our community to fight crime and further reduce auto theft incidents. Although York Region is experiencing an increase in violent crime in 2024, the region remains one of the safest communities in Canada. Learn more about YRP’s upcoming initiatives.

Keeping stakeholders informed is also important. This includes the City’s Intergovernmental Relations Sub-Committee, which was briefed on community safety on Sept. 16 as part of an update on the sub-committee’s priorities and progress to date.

We all have a role to play in community safety. Anyone with information about a crime is asked to contact YRP at 1-866-876-5423, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or leave an anonymous tip online at 1800222tips.com. In an emergency or to report a crime in progress, call 9-1-1.
