The Regional Municipality of York at its Sept. 11 meeting approved the submission of a municipal application from the City of Vaughan for exemption from the Retail Business Holidays Act. This decision is now under a statutory 30-day appeal period, which ends after Thanksgiving.
The exemption will be for all retail businesses within the following boundaries: Steeles Avenue to the south, Yonge Street to the east, Highway 7 to the north and Dufferin Street to the west, to remain open on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
The Retail Business Holidays Act requires businesses to be closed on a number of public holidays unless they receive an exemption on the grounds of promoting tourism.
The City of Vaughan applied for the exemption because a variety of tourist attractions exist within two kilometres of this area, and many of the retail businesses operating in this part of Vaughan offer culturally significant products that cater to people visiting from throughout the GTA and New York State.
