Mayor Steven Del Duca issued the following statement regarding the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.

“Today, the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III took place at Westminster Abbey in London, England. On behalf of Members of Council, I want to congratulate His Majesty on his coronation and wish him great success in continuing his mother’s legacy of kindness and public service.

“As the first coronation of a Canadian head of state in seven decades, this milestone event will allow communities to come together and highlight themes that both King Charles III and Canadians cherish, including service, the environment and sustainability, and our nation’s diversity. Today’s ceremony, conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, represents a new chapter in our country’s history.

“Canada is a constitutional monarchy and Commonwealth realm. Today’s historic occasion is an opportunity to celebrate the close ties between His Majesty and Canada, as well as the role the Crown plays in our system of government and our sense of identity. This morning, the City of Vaughan acknowledged the King’s Coronation by raising the Royal Union Flag at City Hall. Later this evening, as a part of the national illumination initiative, City Hall will be lit in emerald-green to recognize His Majesty’s reign as King of Canada.

“Vaughan City Hall also has a special connection to Canada’s head of state. The accessibility ramp was recently renamed the Honourable David C. Onley Accessibility Gateway in honour of the former lieutenant governor, and City Hall’s fountain was recently renamed in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

“Vaughan joins municipalities and governments across Canada in offering congratulations to His Majesty King Charles III on this momentous occasion. Long Live the King.”
