Vaughan Turns Out the Lights for Earth Hour
The City of Vaughan will turn of all non-essential lighting at City facilities for one hour beginning at 8:30 p.m. in support of Earth Hour 2011 on Saturday, March 26. Created by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour is a one hour lights out event that mobilizes millions worldwide to show support for action against climate change.
Earth Hour 2010 became the biggest Earth Hour ever with a record 4,616 cities in 128 countries participating around the world. Vaughan’s participation in 2010 resulted in an energy savings of 13 megawatts or enough electricity to power 216 average-sized homes for a 24-hour period.
Vaughan residents are encouraged to participate by turning off their lights at home and joining Earth Hour events. The fourth annual Woodbridge Lantern Walk for Earth Hour will begin on March 26 at 8:30 p.m. at the Woodbridge Memorial Arena parking lot and include refreshments, music, speeches, a residential solar power exhibit and a Green Hero Award presentation. The entire event will run from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Residents are asked to bring an environmentally-friendly light for the walk, such as an LED flashlight, and a reusable cup or travel mug for refreshments.
