The City of Vaughan is working on the City-wide Sports Facilities Needs Assessment Study to help inform the planning of parks and outdoor sports facilities. The needs assessment will review the City’s current inventory of sports fields and courts, identify opportunities to better utilize existing facilities and recommend locations for new or upgraded facilities, in line with the 2018 Active Together Master Plan.

What is the Active Together Master Plan?

The Active Together Master Plan (ATMP), originally prepared in 2008 and updated every five years by the City of Vaughan, provides guidance on the planning, distribution and decision-making for new parks and recreational facilities including service levels.

To ensure the long-term growth needs of the public are met, this needs assessment will help ensure facility provision standards outlined in the ATMP recommendations support City-building priorities and align with residents’ needs.

A recommendation of the ATMP is to monitor use/membership and condition of outdoor bocce courts to determine if any can be repurposed to satisfy other recreation needs.

In line with that recommendation, and the work being completed as part of the Tennis and Racquet Sports Study, the City is currently conducting a facility use monitoring pilot to help determine when and how bocce and tennis courts in Vaughan are being used.

The City is gathering this data through the following methods:

  • self-directed on-site signage
  • on-site court-use observation by City staff
