New cycling facilities are coming to Jane Street!

The City of Vaughan’s active transportation network – from sidewalks and bike lanes, to multi-use pathways and recreational trails – continues to grow!

Advancing active transportation options is a priority for the City. In 2023, more than 125 kilometres of active transportation infrastructure at different stages of study, design and implementation progressed in Vaughan through municipal, regional and partner projects. Some of these projects include adding more than 11 kilometres of new cycle tracks and multi-use pathways, and updating 29 kilometres of existing multi-use pathways with new pavement markings and signage.

Once complete, the Jane Street Uptown Link will include eight kilometres of new in-boulevard cycle tracks (designated spaces for bike riders separated from those walking or driving that are marked with a bicycle symbol, arrow and diamond), four kilometres of new sidewalks and four kilometres of streetlight enhancements along Jane Street, from Highway 7 to Teston Road.

The City received a $9.6-million contribution from the Government of Canada’s Active Transportation Fund to deliver this project. York Region has also committed $3.2 million in funding towards this project, known as the Jane Street Uptown Link. The total project cost is $16 million, which includes the City’s contribution of $3.2 million.

Project timeline

The first phase of this project will include work along Jane Street, from Highway 7 to Major Mackenzie Drive, with construction anticipated to begin in June 2024. The second phase will include the construction for the remainder of Jane Street, from Major Mackenzie Drive to Teston Road, in 2025.

Identified in the City’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan, these new cycle tracks will be open for use in 2026. They will offer connections to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, Vaughan Mills, Canada’s Wonderland and more than 500 businesses along Jane Street.

This project was supported in part by the Government of Canada.
