2016 Water and Wastewater/Stormwater Budget approved

Vaughan reaffirms its commitment to provide safe drinking water

Safe drinking water, effective wastewater collection and stormwater management are cornerstones of a sustainable and healthy community. On Feb. 16, the City of Vaughan reaffirmed its commitment to the health and wellness of residents by approving the 2016 Water and Wastewater/Stormwater Budget.

The budget will ensure the City is able to provide sustainable water services, maintain current infrastructure, such as water pipes, and save for future infrastructure needs. Included in the budget is a rate increase of 9.8 per cent ($0.3331 per cubic metre). That means the average ratepayer who uses 267 cubic metres will pay an additional $88.94 annually or $7.41 per month.

The rate increase will allow the City to:
  • support the health of residents by providing safe drinking water
  • be environmentally responsible with effective wastewater collection
  • mitigate flooding and protect the environment with efficient stormwater management
The water and wastewater/stormwater rates also support operating and maintenance activities, including regulatory compliance and the purchase of water and wastewater treatment services from the Region of York. The water consumed in Vaughan is taken from Lake Ontario and treated by the City of Toronto and the Region of Peel. It is then stored and supplied by the Region of York.
