Alarms for Life is back in Vaughan!
Firefighters are out in
the community sharing information and answering questions about smoke and CO
alarms
Did you know 73 per cent of all fatal fires in Canada each
year are caused by home fires? Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS) is
working to reduce the risk of death and harm from fire and carbon monoxide (CO)
poisoning by providing citizens with the information they need to keep themselves
and their families safe. The Alarms for Life program is back!
This annual campaign encourages compliance with the Ontario
Fire Code requirement to have a working CO alarm installed in every home as
well as a smoke alarm on each floor. In years past, firefighters have visited
neighbourhoods across Vaughan to speak with citizens about fire safety and
check to make sure they have the appropriate working smoke and CO alarms. However,
as COVID-19 persists, this year’s community outreach will look a little
different.
Each weekend until early fall, VFRS firefighters will be
going door to door in some neighbourhoods to drop off information on smoke
alarms and speak with citizens – they will adhere to Public Health guidelines
related to COVID-19 by maintaining physical distancing and wearing the
appropriate personal protective equipment. If you see a fire truck out and
about, be sure to say hi to the firefighters and ask any questions you may
have. For non-emergency assistance with smoke or CO alarms, call VFRS at
905-832-8531, ext. 2.
Those who feel unwell,
and believe they have symptoms related to COVID-19, should contact York Region
Public Health at 1-800-361-5653 or Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000.
