Be a responsible pet owner – license your dog or cat today!
Licensing helps to easily identify and safely reunite lost pets with their owners
Did you know that Fluffy and Fido need a licence? Dogs and cats in Vaughan must wear a City-issued licence or numbered tag on their collar at all times. Not only will this help identify and safely reunite lost pets with their owners, but it’s the law!
Dog and cat licences expire annually and must be renewed prior to the anniversary date of purchase to ensure the pet’s information is kept up to date. Existing registered owners will be notified at renewal time. Remember to always update your contact information if it changes before your renewal date.
Online pet licensing is available and takes about 10 minutes to complete. To use this online service, a specific login is required. If this is your first time registering for a licence, you can create an account directly online. If you are renewing a pet license, your login information can be found on your renewal letter or by contacting Animal Services at 905-832-2281 or animal.services@vaughan.ca.
What you need for pet licence registration:
- Your contact information, including address, phone and email
- Your pet’s information, including name, type, sex, breed and colour
- If applicable, your pet’s microchip number
- The date of your pet’s most recent rabies vaccination, including expiry date, the name of the veterinary clinic that performed the vaccination and proof of vaccination (certificate)
- If applicable, the name of the veterinarian/clinic that performed your pet’s spay/neuter and proof of spay/neuter
- A photo of your pet can be submitted to animal.services@vaughan.ca
If an impounded dog or cat has identification, like a City-issued licence, Vaughan Animal Services will contact the owner so they can be reunited as soon as possible. Failure to license your dog or cat every year may result in a fine of $300. The Animal Control By-law 066-2020 protects the health and well-being of cats and dogs by promoting responsible pet ownership through licensing, vaccination and registration. It also promotes the humane treatment of all animals, both wild and domestic.
As a precautionary measure in response to COVID-19, the Vaughan Animal Shelter is closed to the public; adoption and pet recovery services are available by appointment only.
