The City of Vaughan’s Civic Hero Award for Ward 2 for 2012 was presented to Daniela, David and Matteo Leggieri. The family was recognized for creating the Marco’s Way Tribute Fund which has raised more than $250,000 in support of cancer research at the Hospital For Sick Children.

Daniela and David Leggieri and their son Matteo suffered the loss of their 5-year-old son and brother Marco to rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of soft tissue cancer in 2008.

“The Leggieri family took this tragedy and decided to turn it into a celebration of young Marco’s life. They established the Marco’s Way Tribute Fund and hold an annual event every year to raise money and awareness for research and to support the SickKids Foundation,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua.

Daniela, David and Matteo Leggieri were nominated for the award by Ward 2 Councillor Tony Carella.

"The Leggieri family is to be commended for their determination to help find a cure,” said Ward 2 Councillor Tony Carella. “Funds raised by the Marco’s Way Tribute Fund will support cancer research at the Hospital For Sick Children and will help many children around the world."

The fifth annual “Strikes 4 Marco” will take place January 6, 2013 at Lucky Strikes Lane at Vaughan Mills and will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
