Deadline for interim and final instalments extended

Throughout the global pandemic, the City of Vaughan has implemented a series of measures to address the challenges COVID-19 has created for citizens and local businesses. To provide further support, effective immediately, the City is providing an additional 30 days of relief on interim property tax bills and a 30-day extension on final instalments for residents.

The City previously announced payments for the March 26, April 27 and May 27 due dates would not be subject to a penalty until June 1. This has now been extended to July 1. Further extensions may be granted thereafter.

As well, the residential final property tax bills that are normally billed in June and due in July, August and September will now be billed in July with instalments due August, September and October. The non-residential tax bills will also be issued in July and due August, September and October.

Although City Hall remains closed to the public until further notice, there are several ways property owners can make payments remotely. These include pre-authorized programs, online and telephone banking, issuing post-dated cheques or by mail. Please consult with your financial institution to determine whether a payment can be made at a branch location.

This marks the latest step by the City to ease the burden caused by COVID-19. Previously, the deadline to apply for the Elderly Home-Owners Tax Assistance (PDF) program, a tax credit in the amount of $377 provided to elderly homeowners who qualify, was extended to May 15. The City also continues to operate its Seniors, Low-Income Seniors and Low-Income Disabled Persons Property Tax Deferral program (PDF). The deadline for this program remains Sept. 30.

During the City’s first-ever electronic-participation Council meeting held on March 30, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council also voted to defer the annual stormwater charge for 60 days and to cancel the planned 2020 water and wastewater rate increases. This has helped provide immediate relief to citizens and businesses. Additional details are available at vaughan.ca/water.

There have also been a number of efforts by the City to aid the local business community. During a special Council meeting on March 17, Council voted in favour of the Vaughan Business Action Plan – which includes a series of measures to safeguard the local economy and protect businesses, consumers and all citizens. As well, the Open for Business online directory was launched to list local businesses that are open during the current state of emergency; the #ShopVaughanLocal campaign encourages residents to do their part to support the local economy by shopping remotely with local businesses and restaurants; and a grace period of 90 days has also been established for business licence renewals, among other supports.

“We continue to implement new measures to lessen the financial burden on property taxpayers during these unprecedented times. Today, we have taken yet another step further by extending the deadline for the interim and final instalments on tax bills by 30 days each. This is the latest action we are taking to provide individuals and families with greater flexibility to balance their household budget. We are in this together, and, by supporting each other, we will emerge stronger.”
       Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua
