The City is reviewing the Fireworks By-law and wants to hear from you

Did you know the City of Vaughan has a Fireworks By-law? Or that fireworks can only be set off on Victoria Day and Canada Day until 11 p.m. without a permit? Do you have an opinion about the current approach? We want to hear from you!

Until Sunday, Nov. 14, the City is asking citizens to participate in an online survey to share their thoughts on the current by-law and whether or not there are any new rules or regulations the City should consider putting in place for fireworks. The survey is available at vaughan.ca/fireworks.

As background – the current Fireworks By-law (142-2006) (PDF) allows consumer fireworks – family fireworks set off in a private, at-home display – to be lit without a permit on Victoria Day or Canada Day. To use fireworks on any other day, a Fireworks Display Permit (PDF) must be obtained from the City. They are only allowed on private property (with the owner’s consent, of course!). It is illegal to set off fireworks in a park, roadway, sidewalk or any other public property. Watch the City’s video on fireworks to learn more.

As part of the City of Vaughan’s Council-approved By-law Strategy, staff regularly create new by-laws and update some of the existing ones. The aim is to review and revise more than 40 by-laws, which have been prioritized by experts in each field. Each by-law will undergo a public consultation phase to ensure stakeholders are properly informed of any changes along the way.

This By-law Strategy aims to make the review process for by-laws more transparent and accessible to the public and create by-laws that address community needs and concerns. It also works to ensure that by-law service levels are measured and provide the best value possible for citizens.
