Lest we forget
City to host virtual Remembrance Day event on Nov. 2
Every November, the City of Vaughan remembers the brave men and women who served and continue to serve our country through a special event and exhibit. As the global COVID-19 pandemic persists – and in order to continue to protect the health and well-being of everyone in the community – this year’s memorial service will be transitioned online. On Monday, Nov. 2 at 10 a.m., citizens are invited to join Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council at the City’s virtual 2020 Remembrance Day event by tuning in to the live broadcast at vaughan.ca/live.

Vaughan’s annual Remembrance Day event is an initiative led by the Office of the City Clerk and the City’s Archives and Records Management Services team. It serves as a reminder to pause, reflect and honour the heroic individuals who went to war to fight for peace and freedom. In addition to formal remarks of remembrance, the 2020 event will be hosted by Vaughan’s City Clerk, Todd Coles, and feature an online exhibit and a digital Poppy Wall for participants to join in from the comfort and safety of home. This year’s exhibit offers a glimpse into the experiences of those who lived during and beyond the World Wars, including the struggles, impact on everyday life and associated triumphs. Through this exhibit, the City will recognize and commemorate the contributions of both soldiers and those on the home front by sharing these unique perspectives.
In addition, citizens will have the opportunity to pay tribute to veterans and soldiers by sharing personal thoughts of gratitude and remembrance on the City’s virtual Poppy Wall. Digital messages will be collected until Wednesday, Nov. 11 and then featured in an online display.
As Vaughan continues to take a disciplined, responsible and measured approach to reopening the city, precautionary measures remain in place to protect citizens from further transmission of COVID-19. Essential services continue uninterrupted and many programs, services and events have been reintroduced through online, teleconference or modified in-person methods – including this annual Remembrance Day commemoration.
