Join the City’s annual event – virtually – on Saturday, March 27

Are you ready to turn off your lights for the environment? The City of Vaughan recognizes Earth Hour – a global movement in which people around the world turn off their lights and spend one hour without power to reduce energy consumption – on Saturday, March 27 at 8:30 p.m. But being in the dark doesn’t mean the fun has to end! Spend your hour crafting, playing games and participating in fun activities with those living in your household after tuning in to the City’s virtual Earth Hour event beginning at 8 p.m.

There are many ways to have fun during Earth Hour, including participating in these energy-friendly activities:
  • Grab a flashlight and make the ultimate blanket and pillow fort.
  • Find your inner zen and do yoga, read a book or play a board game by candlelight.
  • Get crafty by making a paper lantern and go out for a lantern walk.
When doing these activities, remember to always put safety first. If walking outside at night, bring a flashlight or a lantern, wear reflective clothing, remain on the sidewalk or a designated pathway and keep your distance from those who do not live in your home. Wear a mask or face covering when physical distancing is not possible.

Don’t forget to share photos and videos of your Earth Hour activities on social media, including drawings, crafts and games. When uploading, use the hashtag #VaughanEarthHour and see how others in the community are spending their hour without power!

The City is also offering a free pollinator seed packet (while supplies last!) to individuals who register so you can create a pollinator-friendly garden in your yard. The pollinator packets include planting instructions for best results and the following flower seeds: Golden Tickseed, Lanceleaf Tickseed, Blazing Star, Helenium autumnale and New England Aster. Claim your seed packets by emailing environment@vaughan.ca with your full name and mailing address.
You are also encouraged to share your thoughts on environmental sustainability to Vaughan’s Earth Hour message board. What do environmental sustainability and energy saving mean to you? How do you plan to participate in Earth Hour at home this year? What are some energy-saving tips and tricks you do regularly? Provide your input for all to read!

In addition to these activities, the City is also hosting a virtual Earth Hour event beginning at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 27. Commemorate the occasion, hear from Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and more by viewing the livestream at vaughan.ca/live. Following the virtual event, the lights at Vaughan City Hall will power down at 8:30 p.m. for one hour in recognition of Earth Hour.

Participating in Earth Hour is your opportunity to help raise awareness for climate change, promote environmental stewardship and create sustainable behaviours. For more information on this year’s virtual event, visit vaughan.ca/EarthHour.
