Vaughan is the proud home of an active Italian-Canadian community

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement during a flag-raising ceremony outside Vaughan City Hall:

“Today, we proudly raise the Italian flag to mark the beginning of Italian Heritage Month across Canada.

“Italians have made lasting and enduring contributions to society – from philosophy and physics to art and fashion, Italy has gifted the world with a culture that is thoughtful and captivating.

“Tens of thousands of Italians immigrated to Canada in search of a better life. Mine was among those families in search of a brighter future. Ours is an embracing country – it welcomed my family, and many others like it, with open arms.

“The City of Vaughan is proud of its multicultural community, in which 105 different languages are spoken, and we are proud to be home to one of the largest Italian populations in Canada.

“In the last half century, Italian-Canadians have transformed our cities and turned them into flourishing communities. By marking Italian Heritage Month, the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of immigrants will be reminded of the hard work and sacrifice of past generations.

“Our country is enriched as a result of the social, political, cultural and economic contributions made by Italian-Canadians, and I encourage everyone to take part in the events hosted at Vaughan City Hall and throughout the community in June.

“On behalf of the City of Vaughan, I take immense pride in marking Italian Heritage Month.

“A nome della città di Vaughan, ho un immenso orgoglio nel proclamare il Mese del Retaggio Culturale Italiano!”
