Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued this statement following news that Canada’s 17th prime minister John Turner has passed away:
“Vaughan
joins communities across Canada in offering our sincerest thoughts and prayers
to the family and friends of former prime minister John Turner.
“In
1988, I had the honour to serve under the leadership of former prime minister
John Turner. As a young 28-year-old member of Parliament, I witnessed firsthand
his deep affection and love for his country. John Turner championed national
unity and Canadian sovereignty. He advanced Canadian values here at home and
around the world.
“Prime
Minister Turner was an accomplished athlete, Rhodes Scholar, lawyer and
business leader who chose to dedicate much of his life to public service. As a
trusted advisor and influential cabinet minister, he held several demanding
portfolios and played a leading role in guiding our country through
unprecedented challenges.
“The
loss of a national figure brings about a period of mourning and deep
reflection. I
have requested that flags at City of Vaughan facilities be lowered to half-mast
in Prime Minister Turner’s memory.”
