Ongoing
investments safeguard Vaughan communities from severe weather events
Mayor
Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement, in response to today’s
funding announcement of $16 million from Infrastructure Canada to support the
City’s ability to better protect residents from natural hazards.
“The
funding committed today will strengthen our resilience to climate change, while
allowing Vaughan communities to better cope with severe weather events.
“These
federal dollars, from the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund (DMAF), will
help offset a portion of the costs, already committed by the City, to improve
water quality of our creek system and to better manage the flood risk to
vulnerable neighbourhoods.
“Today’s
federal-municipal partnership will further advance our Stormwater Retrofit
program – demonstrating Vaughan’s ongoing commitment to keep up with the
servicing needs of our growing city.
“When
severe weather strikes, these investments give us peace of mind in knowing we
can access clean drinking water and the roads connecting us to friends and
family are well maintained.
“Front-line
staff are our trusted city-building partners who continue demonstrating their
commitment to Service Excellence by providing their best to the citizens we
proudly serve.
“While
we celebrate transformational initiatives, including the subway, the Mackenzie
Vaughan Hospital, Niagara University and our new downtown - the Vaughan
Metropolitan Centre - we continue to build the critical infrastructure that
keeps our city moving.
“We also
know, through our 2018 Citizen Satisfaction Survey results, that a strong
majority of our residents support our infrastructure renewal efforts.
“The
Canadian government’s long-term vision to invest in infrastructure, through
programs such as DMAF, demonstrates our shared dedication to the health and
well-being of our citizens.
“Vaughan
will continue striving for the most effective and efficient ways of providing
high-level services to everyone who calls our community home.”
