Fostering continued relations between Vaughan and Turkey with newly appointed Turkish Consul General

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement after meeting with Her Excellency, Mrs. Sinem Mingan, Consul General of Turkey in Toronto.

“Earlier today I was pleased to meet with Her Excellency, Mrs. Sinem Mingan who was recently appointed as the Consul General of Turkey in Toronto. I congratulated her on this exciting new role and reaffirmed Vaughan’s commitment to work together to identify opportunities for cultural and economic partnerships.

“The City of Vaughan enjoys a strong and prosperous relationship with our Turkish partners. Turkey is Canada’s 23rd largest trading partner – half of which takes place here in Ontario. Relations between our countries are based on common values, a long-standing alliance under the NATO umbrella, as well as co-operation on multilateral platforms like the UN and G20.

“Our meeting provided an opportunity to share insights about important projects that are propelling Vaughan’s transformation, including a downtown core rising from the ground, a hospital under construction, a new 900-acre park and welcoming York Region’s first university. Since 2010, Vaughan has led with an employment growth rate of four per cent – far outpacing Ontario and Canada – and has seen the creation of more than 60,000 new jobs. More than 90 per cent of the foreign-owned companies operating in York Region are based in Vaughan and the city’s southern York Region neighbouring communities.

The Consul General, in her visit to Vaughan, had the opportunity to meet with local international businesses.

“Vaughan is blessed and enriched by the diversity of our citizens. People from around the world choose our city to build a better, more promising life for their families. Nearly half of our population was born abroad and Vaughan residents speak 105 different languages. Multiculturalism allows us to further strengthen global connections both culturally and economically. As we look toward our community’s promising future, we will continue to unleash Vaughan’s potential as a world-class city.

“I want to thank the Consul General of Turkey and her role in preserving and fostering Turkish heritage in the City of Vaughan.”
