Sept. 30 is the deadline to apply for the Seniors, Low-Income Seniors and Low-Income Disabled Persons Property Tax Deferral program

As the global pandemic persists, the City of Vaughan continues to offer support and relief programs to help the community recover from the unintended consequences of the virus. This includes administrating York Region’s Seniors, Low-Income Seniors and Low-Income Disabled Persons Property Tax Deferral program (PDF).

This program provides financial assistance in the form of a tax deferral to eligible citizens. To qualify, the property owner must be at least one of the following:
  • a senior citizen who is at least 65 years of age
  • a low-income senior between the ages of 55-64
  • a low-income individual with a disability
The property for which the taxes are payable must be in Vaughan and owned by an eligible senior or person with a disability as a principal residence on Jan. 1 of the eligible year. View additional eligibility requirements and proper documentation needed before completing the online application package. The deadline to apply for this program is Wednesday, Sept. 30. For further information, contact the City’s tax department at 905-832-8502 (toll-free:1-844-832-2112).

Relief was also offered to seniors this year with the Elderly Home-owners Tax Assistance Program (PDF) – a tax credit in the amount of $387 to elderly homeowners who qualify. The application deadline for this assistance program was extended to May 2020 to help ease the burden caused by the virus and to give more people the opportunity to participate. For interested citizens who are looking to apply for the 2021 tax year, the program application deadline is now Wednesday March 31, 2021.

In March, the City waived the late penalty charge on interim property tax bills until July 1 for the March 26, April 27 and May 27 payment due dates. Final billing due dates for all properties were also extended as additional measures. This means that the 2020 final residential property tax bills that are normally billed in June and due in July, August and September were billed in July with the due dates of Aug. 27, Sept. 25 and Oct. 28. Several payment options are available while Vaughan City Hall remains closed. These include pre-authorized programs, online and telephone banking, issuing post-dated cheques, in-person drop box located at Vaughan City Hall or by mail.

As well, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council also voted to defer the annual stormwater charge for 60 days and to cancel the planned 2020 water and wastewater rate increases. This has helped provide immediate relief to citizens and businesses. Additional details are available at vaughan.ca/water.
