Reminders for winter waste collection

Proper set-out ensures curbside collection runs smoothly and safely

Snow may be pretty as it’s falling, but it can impact the way you set out waste. The City of Vaughan is committed to providing helpful tips and reminders about waste collection during the winter to ensure it can run smoothly, safely and efficiently.

Winter waste set-out

  • Clear a space at the curb for your bins and bags.
  • Where possible, waste should be set out approximately one metre from the curb on the right-hand side of the driveway (when facing the home). Never place items on top of or behind a snowbank.
  • Waste bins and bags must be kept off the road.
  • Ensure waste is placed at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on the day of your regularly scheduled collection. Waste collectors will not return for materials set out late.

Taking these steps allows crews to collect waste safely and for the City to clear the snow effectively in residential areas.

Frozen materials

Did some of your items not get collected? With colder weather in the air, some waste materials may freeze inside your bins and adhere directly to the bins' interior. If staff are unable to dislodge the waste material, it will remain inside the bin. Keep any materials left in the bin until your next collection day. Crews cannot return for bins that were not fully emptied due to freezing. To help prevent freezing, place your waste out in the morning by 7 a.m. instead of leaving them out overnight.
