Remove leaves and other debris from catch basins

When it rains, keep an eye on the drains! That is, the stormwater drains located in the road – also known as catch basins. Catch basins ensure rainwater makes its way back into ponds, streams and lakes. But if a catch basin is blocked or covered by leaves or other debris, rainwater can pool and cause street flooding.

You can help ensure this doesn’t happen!

The resident living closest to a catch basin is encouraged to help clear it, if it’s safe to do so – especially before or during heavy rainfall.

You can report sewer or street flooding to Service Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or service@vaughan.ca.

There are approximately 22,000 catch basins in Vaughan that are critical in keeping stormwater moving. The City of Vaughan regularly maintains these drainage systems to keep Vaughan’s water clean and reliable and to avoid it flooding onto city streets. Help protect this infrastructure by preventing yard waste, such as twigs and leaves, food scraps, chemicals, pool water and other debris from going into catch basins. Remember: only rain goes down the drain.
