Spring cleaning your yard

Weekly leaf and yard waste starts the week of April 20

Warm weather signals the beginning of new life for plants and flowers and a time to enjoy the outdoors. It also means it’s time for a spring cleanup of yards and gardens. Starting the collection week of April 20, weekly leaf and yard waste collection runs until the week of June 11.

Leaf and yard waste can be placed out in Kraft paper bags or open-top rigid containers with handles, up to 121 litres (32 gallons) in size, and clearly marked “Leaf and Yard Waste.” Yard waste stickers can be mailed out upon request through Access Vaughan by calling 905-832-2281 or by email at accessvaughan@vaughan.ca.

Kraft bags that are weathered and are unable contain the material during collection will be left behind for re-packaging and collected the following week.

Acceptable leaf and yard waste materials include:
  • plant material (no soil) and leaves
  • branches, twigs and cuttings that are tied in secure bundles and less than 1.5 metres (five feet) in length and 0.6 metres (two feet) in diameter, weighing less than 20.5 kilograms (45 pounds)
  • individual branches that are less than 10 centimetres (four inches) in diameter, bundled securely
Materials that do not belong in leaf and yard waste include:
  • stumps and root balls
  • any leaf and yard waste material contaminated with household waste or non-leaf and yard waste such as green bin organics
  • any set out that contains sod, soil, rocks or stones (contact York Region for rock and stone disposal options)
Remember, the collection time may change without notice. Leaf and yard waste should be placed at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before collection and no later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection. Visit vaughan.ca/waste for leaf and yard waste program details and requirements.

The City of Vaughan’s weekly spring leaf and yard waste collection begins the third week of April each year to help protect native and pollinator-friendly species. Research suggests that waiting to clean up your garden or yard until temperatures are consistently warm (around 15 C and above) directly benefits these habitats. Be a kind neighbour and do not place leaf and yard waste out earlier than the scheduled collection weeks to help prevent litter on streets and protect pollinators.

To ensure waste collection is done correctly and safely, the City is reminding residents of the following information and services.

Personal protective equipment belongs in the garbage

Tissues, paper towels and napkins go in the green bin. All masks and gloves belong in the garbage. Blue boxes with these items will not be picked up by waste collectors. Front-line workers at York Region’s Materials Recovery Facility sort blue box materials by hand; when these items are put in with recycling, it places workers in direct contact with materials potentially contaminated with COVID-19.

Following these waste disposal tips will help you properly and easily sort your items.

What goes in the blue box?

The following items are recyclable:
  • plastic bottles, jug and containers
  • milk/juice cartons and drink boxes (no straws)
  • steel/aluminum food and beverage cans, trays, plates and foil
  • empty paint and aerosol cans (lids removed)
  • unbroken glass bottles and jars
  • printed paper (books, magazines, envelopes, etc.)
  • cardboard, broken down and flattened (detergent, dry food boxes, etc.)
  • corrugated cardboard (flatted and bundled)
The following items are not recyclable:
  • disposable wipes, masks and gloves
  • tissues, paper towels, napkins
  • Styrofoam™
  • black plastic
  • plastic bags and bagged recycling
  • paper coffee cups and coffee pods
  • food pouches
  • clothing
  • toys
  • hoses
  • hangers
When putting items in a blue box, it’s important to rinse out food containers such as soup cans, yogurt containers, pop bottles, jam jars and more to ensure they can be recycled. If the item contains food or food residue, it cannot be recycled and sent to the landfill. The waste facility is unable to wash and clean recyclables.
