Mayor Bevilacqua encourages residents to shop and dine locally

Today, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Ward 4 Councillor Sandra Yeung Racco joined Catherine Hou, president of the Chinese Cuisine & Hospitality Association of Canada, to visit KUU Sushi, a local restaurant taking part in the Asialicious Asian Restaurant Food Festival, to show support for Asian-Canadian small businesses in Vaughan. This visit follows the City’s annual Lunar New Year event on Feb. 2, held in celebration of one of the most elaborate, colourful and important festivities to the Asian community.

“I want to thank Catherine Hou and the Chinese Cuisine & Hospitality Association of Canada for the integral role this organization plays in attracting visitors and investment to Vaughan,” Mayor Bevilacqua said. “Small businesses remain the backbone of our thriving economy and represent more than 80 per cent of all local job creators. We are here today to reaffirm public confidence in the safety of our community and to encourage residents to support small business owners by shopping and dining locally,” he added.

Mayor Bevilacqua’s comments come following the recent concerns about the COVID-19 virus. York Region Public Health is closely monitoring the situation in collaboration with provincial and national health agencies and reports that the risk of acquiring the virus in the community remains low for York Region residents.

Vaughan is one of the fastest-growing communities in Canada with more than 12,000 businesses that employ upwards of 223,000 people. The City’s economic growth has been transformational in the last 10 years with 60,000 jobs being created and major city-building initiatives being realized.

The City of Vaughan is committed to helping small businesses thrive and offers advice, access to industry experts and assistance with brand development through the Vaughan Business Enterprise Centre (VBEC). As outlined in the 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan, Council is committed to ensuring the City undertakes initiatives that ignite economic prosperity and social capital, celebrate Vaughan as an entrepreneurial city, and showcase the city as the gateway to economic activity in the Greater Toronto Area and beyond. The City will launch the new Economic Prosperity, Investment and Social Capital Task Force this year to help bring forward ideas to strengthen our local economy and engage residents.
