What citizens need to know as the reopening process continues

The City continues its disciplined, measured and responsible approach in responding to COVID-19 as York Region – and Vaughan – moves into Step 3 of the Province of Ontario’s Roadmap to Reopening today.

This is good news for recreation enthusiasts. In Step 3, fitness centres and indoor pools are now permitted, with maximum capacity up to 50 per cent with other restrictions. Starting Wednesday, July 21, Vaughan fitness centres and pools will reopen. Advance registration will be required; appointment bookings can be made starting Monday, July 19 at 8:30 a.m. For more information, visit vaughan.ca/recreation.

Members are encouraged to reactivate their membership in advance to make booking a workout or swim easier. All fitness and pool memberships were put on a temporary hold for the duration of the community centres’ closures. Members must have an active membership to book a time block for a workout, recreational/length swim, and aquafitness class. Pool plan holders who do not reactivate their membership will be required to pay a single visit fee. To reactivate a membership, email  RecCSD@vaughan.ca or call Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281.

Starting today, Vaughan Public Libraries will be expanding capacity limits at its three resource libraries, Bathurst Clark Resource Library, Civic Centre Resource Library and Pierre Berton Resource Library. Curbside pickup at community centre branches, virtual programming and the Virtual Info Desk continue.

Here is a summary of what is permitted in the Province’s Step 3:
  • Outdoor social gatherings and organized public events for up to 100 people
  • Indoor social gatherings and organized public events for up to 25 people
  • Indoor dining with capacity limited to ensure physical distancing, without limits to the number of patrons per table
  • Retail with capacity limited to ensure physical distancing
  • Indoor religious services, rites or ceremony gatherings with capacity limited to ensure physical distancing
  • Indoor sports and recreational fitness facilities with capacity limits
  • Personal care services with capacity limited to ensure physical distancing
  • Museums, casinos and bingo halls with capacity limits
  • Cinemas, concerts, theatres and other performing arts venues with capacity limits
In addition, the following outdoor City amenities remain open:
  • Baseball fields

  • Playgrounds
  • Skateboard parks
  • Splashpads

The City is reminding citizens to make safety the priority when enjoying all Vaughan has to offer, including using park amenities and playgrounds – they are not sanitized. It is important that everyone stays vigilant and follows York Region Public Health protocols designed to help protect the health of the entire community, including:
  • staying home as much as possible and limiting close contact to those in your immediate household.
  • practising physical distancing (PDF) with anyone outside of your household by staying two metres away.
  • washing your hands thoroughly and often.
  • practising respiratory etiquette.
  • avoiding touching your face with unwashed hands.
  • wearing a face mask or covering when inside public places and when physical distancing cannot be maintained.
  • cleaning high-touch surfaces often.
  • getting vaccinated as soon as you are eligible.
  • downloading the COVID-Alert app.

As amenities safely reopen, the City continues to make the health and safety of the community a priority to stop the spread of COVID-19. On this front, the City's By-law and Compliance, Licensing and Permit Services department, in partnership with public health officials, York Regional Police and other levels of government, remains at the forefront in applying and enforcing the provincial regulations passed under the Reopening Ontario (A Flexible Response to COVID-19) Act, 2020, the directions of the Medical Officer of Health and the City’s COVID-19 Emergency Measures By-law. Public complaints, concerns and inquiries should be reported to Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or accessvaughan@vaughan.ca.

QUOTE

“Today, Vaughan and York Region advanced to the third and final step of the Province’s Roadmap to Reopening. The citizens of Vaughan have worked exceptionally hard to reach this momentous milestone, and I want to express my sincerest gratitude and appreciation to everyone who has demonstrated resilience, discipline and focus in our collective fight against COVID-19. This journey has been a marathon, not a sprint. By working together and supporting each other, we have come a long way, and now, better days are upon us. More than 1.2-million vaccines have been administered in York Region, and, to date, more than 80 per cent of all eligible individuals aged 12+ have received at least one dose. The remarkable efforts of citizens to get vaccinated is the reason why COVID-19 case counts are on the decline in our community, but we cannot let our guard down. If you have not yet received your vaccination, I encourage you to visit york.ca/COVID19 to book your appointment today. The Vaughan spirit is ready, resilient and resourceful. I remain confident that we will emerge stronger together.”
-       Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua
