Vaughan Powers Down for Earth Hour
The City of Vaughan and its residents and businesses joined millions around the world by turning out the lights for Earth Hour on Saturday, March 26.
PowerStream reported that Vaughan reduced its energy consumption by 8.8 per cent, up from 7.0 per cent last year. By turning off the lights between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., the City reduced its energy use by 28.4 megawatts, enough energy to power 860 average-sized homes for 24 hours.
“Earth Hour is an effective way to show support for the environment and sends a powerful message to others that together we can make a difference,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “I know that Vaughan residents care deeply about the environment and that, collectively, we can move forward and achieve our goal of a sustainable future.”
In support of Earth Hour, the City of Vaughan turned off all non-essential lighting at City facilities for one hour. Residents also participated in the fourth annual Woodbridge Lantern Walk which included music, speeches, a residential solar power exhibit and a Green Hero Award presentation. It was another record-breaking year for Earth Hour with events taking place in 134 countries.
“The City’s support for Earth Hour is consistent with the goals and priorities set out in Green Directions Vaughan, the City’s Community Sustainability and Environmental Master Plan. It also demonstrates our ongoing commitment to promoting environmentally responsible practices,” said City Manager Clayton Harris.
