The health and safety of the community is a top priority for the City of Vaughan – and that includes ensuring the water that comes out of your taps is safe to drink. Well, the results are in, and, once again, the City received a 100 per cent inspection rating from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP)!

The MECP regularly inspects municipal residential drinking water systems to assess compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002. Each year, the City produces a full report (PDF) on the water quality and operational performance of Vaughan’s drinking water system – including that 100 per cent inspection rating that was captured in the MECP 2022-2023 Chief Drinking Water Inspector’s Report.

Here are other highlights from the 2023 report:

  • The Drinking Water Quality Management System was re-accredited by the MECP in 2021. The City’s Water Distribution System remains fully accredited following two external surveillance audits of the City’s Operational Plan on May 19, 2022, and June 28, 2023.

  • In 2023, the City invested $18.5 million to install, repair and replace the infrastructure required to deliver safe drinking water.

  • Nearly 36 million cubic metres of water was supplied to residential, industrial, commercial and institutional locations across Vaughan last year.

The 2023 Annual Drinking Water System Report (PDF), which was ratified at the March 26, 2024 Council meeting, shows the City’s commitment to achieving the highest standards for Vaughan’s drinking water system – and we won’t stop here.

The City continues to prioritize the drinking water system by investing in infrastructure to help maintain, enhance and protect it for generations to come. And City staff continue to put the community’s health and safety first by ensuring our water is of the highest quality to meet the daily demand.
