About the City’s Pickleball Study

The City conducted a survey from Feb. 19 to March 5, 2021 to help identify preferences for pickleball courts and locations. Results of the survey can be found in this report (PDF). Following the survey, and based on site location criteria, several existing tennis court locations were identified as sites to retrofit for shared-use for pickleball play for the 2021 playing season.

As recommended in Vaughan’s 2018 Active Together Master Plan, the City conducted a study to evaluate the feasibility of using existing tennis courts to accommodate pickleball play (with shared pickleball-tennis courts). Through the Pickleball Study, the City evaluated the demand, implementation tools and opportunities for pickleball facilities in Vaughan. This included considerations for planning and implementing new pickleball courts, site selection criteria to help determine suitable sites for new pickleball court sites and recommended locations for retrofit of existing tennis courts into dedicated pickleball courts.

The study was completed in 2022 with public feedback collected and the verdict is: pickleball is here to stay! Based on the findings, the City is offering new outdoor shared-use pickleball courts as well as developing dedicated pickleball courts.

Pickleball Study timeline

Phase 1: Pickleball survey (Completed Q1 2021)

A survey was conducted to help identify best practices and preferences for pickleball courts and locations from Feb. 19 to March 15, 2021. Thank you to those who participated. The results of the survey can be found in this report (PDF).

Phase 2: Pickleball implementation (Completed Q2 to Q3 2021)

Following the survey and based on site location criteria, several existing tennis courts were identified as sites to establish pickleball courts for the 2021 playing season. City staff solicited further feedback from pickleball players. Staff identified and discussed pickleball best practices and preferences, which were integrated into the Pickleball Study.

Phase 3: Pickleball Study monitoring and feedback (Completed Q3 to Q4 2021)

This phase of the project helped the City gauge the public’s interest in the sport of pickleball and outdoor pickleball facilities. Residents provided feedback and recommendations regarding the pickleball pilot sites, including locations and site amenities.

Phase 4: Findings and recommendation (Completed Q2 2022)

In the final phase of the Pickleball Study, City staff reviewed feedback from players and residents and reported on findings and recommendations to Council.

Additional pickleball courts will continue to be provided on a case-by-case basis through the lining of existing tennis courts based on site selection criteria. 10 additional shared use locations will be rolling out in 2023.

The City moved forward with identifying sites for dedicated pickleball courts to be completed by end of 2024:

  • Carrville Community Centre and District Park (4 dedicated courts)
  • Le Parc Park (4 dedicated courts)

The recommendations from the Study will be included in the Active Together Master Plan update and will inform future programming.

Additional opportunities for engagement will be available as part of the Active Together Master Plan update and Tennis and Racquet Sports Strategy.
