Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Stormwater Management and Drainage Enhancement Study

The City of Vaughan is building the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC) into a destination of choice.

As the area continues to experience significant growth, plans are underway to guide its transformation into a downtown core with plenty of transportation connections, housing options, retail uses, public amenities and so much more. Our efforts include ensuring the VMC’s infrastructure – such as storm sewers, stormwater ponds, and more – remain functional, effective and safe for the growing community.

As the downtown continues to build out, we’re updating our stormwater management and drainage strategy to better provide stormwater controls to reduce flooding and stormwater runoff onto streets, parks and lawns and to provide water quality control prior to stormwater reaching the natural watercourse.

Through the VMC Stormwater Management and Drainage Enhancement Environmental Assessment Study, existing conditions will be outlined, alternative solutions for the VMC build-out will be identified, and mitigation measures will be evaluated.

Get involved

Join the City’s VMC project team at a Public Information Centre (PIC) on Thursday, December from 5:30 p.m.to 7:30 p.m. at the David Braley Vaughan Metropolitan Centre of Community (200 Apple Mill Rd., main lobby) – right in the heart of the VMC. You’ll hear more about the study underway – including why it’s vital and what it will achieve – and share your thoughts directly with the people making the plan.

Can’t attend in person? Materials from the meeting will be posted to this webpage on the day of PIC#1 on Thursday, December 5. Comments or questions can be submitted via a comment form and emailed to VMC.SWMstudy@vaughan.ca.

What is a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Study?

MCEA Studies are prepared for large-scale and complex public projects to improve connections to local and regional infrastructure, access to future residential developments, support transit-oriented corridors, and enhance transit ridership, cycling and walking. These studies also promote good environmental planning by balancing economic, social, cultural and natural environmental needs. Overall, EAs review and determine the potential effects of a project prior to implementation.
