Advancing Vaughan’s infrastructure
Working in one of Canada’s fastest-growing municipalities, the City of
Vaughan’s Infrastructure Development portfolio has a critical mandate. The team
preserves corporate assets, prepares for growth and advances the transportation
system. In addition, staff provide consistent delivery of municipal facilities,
amenities and infrastructure that contribute to the well-being of the community
– including parks and trails, new and renovated libraries and community
centres, roads, bridges and the things we cannot see but are vital, such as underground
pipelines and so much more. An overview of the team’s recent achievements and ongoing
projects is presented in the Infrastructure Development 2021 Delivery Report – which was recently approved by Vaughan
Council.
The report showcases the vast capital programs and projects that advanced last year to effectively build, revitalize and enhance municipal infrastructure. It also outlines the portfolio’s 2021 accomplishments, progress updates and an overview of 2022 initiatives.
Some highlights are as follows:
- Major strides were made to help improve the flow of traffic around the city, including the widening of Major Mackenzie Drive, the Highway 427 extension, the construction of Clark Avenue’s cycle tracks and more.
- ·he City continues to move important Environmental Assessment (EA) studies forward, such as the Bass Pro Mills Drive EA, the Kirby Road Widening EA and more.
- Work continues on the Kirby Road Extension, the Canada Drive-American Avenue Bridge, the King Vaughan Road Bridge, the Woodbridge Avenue Improvements Project and more.
- Active transportation infrastructure continues to improve throughout the community. Projects include the Humber Trail Feasibility Study, Clark Avenue cycle tracks, the pedestrian crossover at York Hill Boulevard and the development of more than 120 kilometres of cycling facilities, multi-use pathways and recreational trails.
- Water, wastewater and stormwater initiatives undertaken include the Black Creek Renewal, Edgeley Pond and Park, Kleinburg Village Improvements, Old Maple Area Improvements and various watermain replacements throughout the community.
- Revitalizations to many City facilities advanced, including Garnet A. Williams Community Centre, the Maple Bowling Alley, the Maple Library and Community Centre and more.
- New facilities announced include the Carrville Community Centre, Library and District Park and Fire Station 7-12.
- Park projects, such as the development of North Maple Regional Park, Block 18 District Park, Glen Shields Park, Summit Park, Doctors McLean District Park and many more, also continue to advance.
- Provincial and international accolades were received for the following environmental and sustainability projects: the LED Streetlight Retrofit Program and the Dorengate Stairs Project.
- Twelve City facilities received accessibility certification from the Rick Hansen Foundation, of which the following three facilities received gold certifications: Carrville Community Centre, Library and District Park (pre-construction), Fire Station 7-3 and Fire Station 7-9.
- Grants contributed to several of the City’s strategic priorities, including the creation of five outdoor rinks, North Maple Regional Park trail development and various accessibility and environmental stewardship initiatives.

The portfolio plays an important role in implementing many of the City’s strategic priorities outlined in the 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan, including City Building, Transportation and Mobility, and Active, Safe and Diverse Communities. Looking ahead, the team continues to undertake initiatives to improve the municipal road network, support transit development and increase the city’s cycling and pedestrian infrastructure. The goal is to advance Vaughan as a fully connected and integrated community and ensure the City’s many infrastructure assets and amenities are enjoyed for years to come.
