York Region signs agreement with Province to advance critical transit project

The following is a statement by Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua regarding an agreement between the Province of Ontario and the Regional Municipality of York to advance the Yonge North Subway Extension:

“York Region Council has taken an important step forward in the development of the Yonge North Subway Extension. Today, we voted in favour of authorizing York Region to execute an agreement with the Ontario government to build the estimated $5.6 billion subway extension.

“The City of Vaughan has always been a strong advocate for the Yonge North Subway Extension. This project is critical to those who live, work and commute in Vaughan and beyond. I am encouraged by the commitment from the Province and I look forward to the Federal government’s support as well.

“The Yonge North Subway Extension is a vital transportation infrastructure project that will have far-reaching benefits to Vaughan and all Greater Toronto Area communities. Commuters in Vaughan, York Region and the GTA can look forward to increased access to transit and reduced travel times as this link will better connect our community to an expanding regional transportation network while also driving economic opportunities along the Yonge Street corridor.

“We are experiencing first-hand the positive benefits of having a subway in the heart of our new downtown, the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC). The VMC Subway continues to be a catalyst for job creation, attracting investments and stimulating city-building opportunities. As we continue to advance our COVID-19 response, this project remains an integral part of our journey to economic recovery.

“Today’s announcement adds to an already impressive list of transit initiatives that will help our citizens move more efficiently throughout the GTA and beyond. The Highway 427 expansion north to Major Mackenzie Drive is well underway; the VMC Mobility Hub seamlessly integrates walking, biking and transit into a sustainable multi-modal hub in the heart of our city; improvements are being made to the Maple and Rutherford GO stations; and work on York Region’s Bus Rapid Transit network continues in our city.”
