Where should a local off-leash dog area be located in Thornhill? The City of Vaughan is looking to develop another local off-leash dog area in the community and is asking residents to help identify a preferred spot. Three potential parks east of Bathurst Street are under consideration – York Hill District Park (330 York Hill Blvd.), Winding Lane Park (580 York Hill Blvd.) and Gallanough Park (21 Springfield Way). Take the survey to share your preference!

The new local off-leash dog area will serve dogs of all sizes, with separate spaces for large and small breeds. New fencing, signage, pathway connections, equipment, amenities and garbage bins will be installed. Be advised a portion of the selected park will be closed during construction of the off-leash area.

To have your say on which of the three proposed locations would be the best fit, visit vaughan.ca/DogPark. Citizens can complete the online survey to review the three options under consideration, provide feedback and apply to join the Off-leash Dog Area Stewardship Program. The survey will be available until Tuesday, April 12.

Off-Leash Dog Area Stewardship Program
Do you want to be more involved in the dog parks? Sign up to join the Off-Leash Dog Area Stewardship Program. Stewards will work with City staff to:
  • foster a positive social environment for dogs and people.
  • educate others on local off-leash dog area regulations and etiquette.
  • communicate any safety concerns.
  • share feedback about operations and maintenance.
  • review pilot studies and share input (what is working well or opportunities for improvement).

To sign up, express your interest through the survey at vaughan.ca/DogPark. The City will contact all interested individuals with next steps.

Building more off-leash dog areas!
The City recognizes the value off-leash dog parks bring to dogs and their families. In June 2021, Council endorsed the Local Off-Leash Dog Area Strategy (PDF) which identified a need to find spaces for pets to safely roam free. After extensive public consultation, the following five local off-leash dog areas have been approved with construction to be completed this summer:
  • Chancellor District Park, 430 Chancellor Dr., Woodbridge
  • Mackenzie Glen District Park, 220 Cranston Park Ave., Maple
  • Matthew District Park, 1 Villa Royale Ave., Woodbridge
  • Sugarbush Heritage Park, 91 Thornhill Woods Dr., Thornhill
  • Legion Park, 71 Legion Court Rd., Woodbridge
