Avoid a ticket, drive the limit!
Automated speed enforcement cameras are now LIVE in Vaughan
Today, the City of Vaughan achieved another milestone in our commitment to community safety! Automated speed enforcement cameras are now LIVE in areas where some of our most vulnerable residents – including children and seniors – live, work and play.
Signage is in place identifying the locations where our 10 mobile cameras are live across the city in Community Safety Zones. The locations were chosen using a data-driven approach to identify areas where speeding is of concern, prioritizing sites based on overall traffic volume, collision history and the presence of schools, parks, community centres, libraries, sidewalks and/or cycling facilities. During the first year, the mobile cameras will be rotated in key areas across the city.
Automated speed enforcement uses a camera and speed measurement device to enforce speed limits. If a vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit, the system captures an image that is reviewed by a Provincial Offences Officer. An image of the offence, licence plate and ticket with an associated fine are then mailed to the vehicle's owner (regardless of who was driving) within 30 days.
Evidence and research indicate other jurisdictions have effectively used this system to reduce speeds on local roads, contributing to a safer road network for all users. Residents may have already noticed speed cameras in Vaughan because York Region has a program in place along some regional roads.
Automated speed enforcement is designed to work in tandem with other road safety methods and strategies, including road designs, educational initiatives and traditional police enforcement. This program is just one of the many ways the City is working to reduce speeding in Vaughan through the MoveSmart Mobility Management Strategy, which helps form and direct the City’s vision to provide a safer, more efficient and sustainable transportation system.

QUOTE
“As Mayor, protecting our community is one of my top priorities, and that includes making sure all road users are and feel safe whether they are behind the wheel or walking down the street. Today, the City of Vaughan’s Automated Speed Enforcement program entered its next phase with speed cameras going live in 10 Community Safety Zones across our city. We all know speeding is reckless, but it bears repeating – slow down, follow the rules of the road and watch out for our most vulnerable road users, including students on their way to and from school. The best way to avoid a ticket is by driving the limit. We all shoulder the responsibility of keeping Vaughan safe, and the City’s speed camera program is another example of how we are taking action to ensure this remains true.”
