Virtual Public Information Session to take place on Sept. 10

Citizens are invited to join the conversation that is shaping the future of the Garnet A. Williams Community Centre. A virtual Public Information Session will take place on Thursday, Sept. 10 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. for interested participants to hear about the community centre’s upcoming major renovation. An online survey will also be shared after the information session to collect high-level feedback on design concepts.

The Garnet A. Williams Community Centre, located at 501 Clark Ave. W., is deeply rooted in the city of Vaughan’s history as its oldest multi-use community centre. Since 1984, the community centre has provided residents of Thornhill with quality leisure programs and activities. Other than ongoing maintenance and repair work, the facility has not been significantly altered since it was expanded in 2005.

Collecting feedback from the community is vital to the success of this community centre’s renovations. Previously, the City reached out to facility users to see what types of physical space and programming improvements would be desired. Based on the recommendations collected, as well as sustainability planning and review of best design practices by key stakeholders and City staff, the community centre is now being redeveloped to improve functionality and design. Citizens who would like to attend this next phase of public engagement can register for their spot online. A link to the virtual Public Information Session will be provided in advance of the event to all registered guests. After the session, a link to the survey will also be made available at vaughan.ca/GAWCC.

The City is committed to keeping the community informed about the design progress as well as construction impacts once the renovation begins. Project updates, details and redevelopment timelines will be regularly updated on the project’s website.

While the Garnet A. Williams Community Centre is closed for renovations, Vaughan Fitness members may use any of the City’s five fitness centres, including the nearby North Thornhill Community Centre Fitness Centre. All Vaughan memberships, such as fitness and sports, may also be put on hold during the facility closure without penalty.

The Garnet A. Williams Community Centre renovation will reinforce a culture of design excellence through the redevelopment of spaces that will respond to the needs of citizens with strong considerations for functionality, accessibility, sustainable design, urban design, architectural design and citizen experience. Once complete, this new centre will further connect the community while enhancing and enriching the quality of life for those who live and play in this fast-growing neighbourhood. The project also reflects the City’s commitment to fostering active, safe and diverse communities that are environmentally sustainable and inclusive as outlined in the 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan and the 2018 Active Together Master Plan.
