Bring on the snow

Vaughan is ready for winter

There is snow in the forecast today and the City of Vaughan is ready for it. With more than 100 vehicles dedicated to removing snow and ice from roads and sidewalks, citizens travelling in Vaughan are in great hands this winter.

The City operates an extensive winter services and road maintenance program to keep the public safe during the winter months. Plowing begins once five centimetres of snow have fallen, and the City aims to plow all roads within 16 hours after a snowfall has ended. Main roads are cleared first so emergency and transit vehicles can get where they need to go. Within four hours after the plow has passed, the residential windrow-clearing machines will clear a portion of the driveway entrance to allow a car to pass through. Major roads, such as Bathurst Street, Dufferin Street, Keele Street and Major Mackenzie Drive, are maintained by York Region.

Sidewalks on main roads are cleared within eight hours of a snowfall ending and within 16 hours on residential streets.

There are a number of tools citizens can use to get up-to-the-minute information on winter operations:
The community also has a role to play. Citizens must clear snow and ice from sidewalks bordering their property within 24 hours after a snowfall has ended to help ensure sidewalks remain safe. Citizens must also remove anything that may interfere with or be hazardous to plow crews. This includes landscaping features such as fencing, basketball nets, decorative stones, pots and bird baths. It’s important that cars are not parked on the street while snowplows are working. This allows crews to safely carry out plowing operations and ensures the entire street can be cleared.
