Celebrate National Youth And Youth Arts Week With Free Activities, Events And Exhibits

​The City of Vaughan is recognizing Youth and Youth Arts Week May 1 - 8 with free games, fitness classes, sports tournaments and arts and dance activities for youth ages 10 to 17 at community centres across Vaughan.

Recreational activities include basketball, dodge ball, soccer and table tennis. Fitness classes feature boot camp, krumping, zumba, aquafitness and recreational swims. Other  opportunities involve photography, cartooning, XBox challenge and a DJ clinic. Select Vaughan fitness centres will also be open for youth ages 14 to 17 on various dates during the week.

For the first time, Vaughan Youth Arts Week is being celebrated in conjunction with Youth Week to showcase youth community-based events and projects from across the City. Art exhibitions will feature a variety of works May 1 - 15.  

Exhibits include “Teen Angst” – Art Exhibition at Vaughan City Hall, depicting the expressions of youth in the community created by students from Holy Cross Catholic Academy. A Youth Art and Crafts Exhibition at Vaughan Arts Space located at the Maple Community Centre will feature glass art, paintings, crystal jewelry, photography, sketches and hand-painted silk batiks created by students of Woodbridge College. An Arts Night at City Hall will be held on May 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will include a “School of Fish” mural created by students of St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic High School Arts Council. The mural will later be installed at the Vellore Village Community Centre.

A complete list of Vaughan Youth Week activities and events can be found in the new Youth Pocket Guide, distributed to Vaughan elementary and secondary schools, community centres, libraries and City Hall and available on the City’s website.

The Youth Pocket Guide provides Vaughan’s youth ages 10 to 17 with information on the City’s recreation and culture programs and services and events. It lists the following: physical and social activities; general, aquatic and special needs programs; memberships to youth rooms and fitness centres; arts, cultural and special events and employment and volunteer opportunities. Also featured is a map of recreation facilities and Active Living Coordinator contacts; opportunities for personal tours of local community centres and information that financial assistance through RECAssist is available to offset recreation and culture program costs.
