Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council with the
Vaughan Council recognized excellence in community spirit and events during two special awards presentations at yesterday’s Council meeting.
The first presentation recognized Vaughan schools for their participation in the Vaughan ALIVE! Celebrate Community Spirit program which acknowledges the achievements and creativity of students across the City. The goal is to promote civic pride, encourage environmental responsibility, and further beautification through community participation and friendly competition.
A variety of opportunities were provided to schools, organizations and businesses with the winners receiving a free acting class from the actorsroom. The winning schools that embodied the program’s core values are as follows:
- Ward 1 – Discovery Elementary School and St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School
- Ward 2 – Toronto District Christian High School
- Ward 3 – Glenn Gould Elementary School and St. Gregory the Great Academy
- Ward 4 – Dr. Roberta Bondar Elementary School and Carrville Mills Elementary School
- Ward 5 – St. Joseph the Worker Elementary School
The winning community organizations and businesses were the actorsroom, Boomerang Health, Elspeth Heyworth Centre for Women, Fuerza Latina Community Services, Façade Academy of the Arts and 360 Kids.
The second presentation recognized the Vaughan Recreation and Culture department Events team for
WinterFest, winner of the Festival and Events Ontario (FEO) 2015 Achievement Award for best promotional campaign in the category $100,000 or less.
WinterFest – a part of the Vaughan Celebrates program that also includes Concerts in the Park and the annual Canada Day event – celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2014. Vibrant anniversary branding was created to promote the event, with a focus on creating a sense of excitement while celebrating Vaughan’s diversity.
Each year, the City of Vaughan proudly presents the Vaughan Celebrates program, which features free, family friendly entertainment and activities. In 2014, Vaughan Celebrates attracted more than 20,000 residents and visitors.
