City-building focus of Vaughan’s pre-budget submission

Job creation, the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and transit remain leading priorities

As one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Canada, the City of Vaughan is experiencing an incredible transformation. In preparation of the provincial government’s 2018 Budget, the City provided a pre-budget submission to Ontario’s Ministry of Finance to support the current and projected growth of the community. The proposal reflects the ongoing city-building work guided by the Term of Council Service Excellence Strategy Map (2014-2018), and provides an opportunity to further advance and achieve the Term of Council Priorities. These include:

  • Attract investment and create jobs
  • Facilitate the development of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre
  • Invest, renew and manage infrastructure and assets
  • Create and manage affordable housing options (secondary suites)
  • Continue to cultivate an environmentally sustainable city
  • Support the development of the City’s new hospital
  • Support the extension of the Yonge Subway and the Concord GO Station/Hub

The submission recognizes the limits placed on funding public services solely from the property tax base. It reinforces the need for the provincial government to provide dedicated funding that will allow Vaughan to ignite new economic development opportunities while improving the quality of life for all residents.

Maintaining and strengthening relationships with all levels of government continues to be a leading priority. Intergovernmental partnerships have resulted in a number of important milestones for Vaughan, including the recent opening of the Toronto Transit Commission’s Line 1 Extension – the first-ever subway stop outside of the City of Toronto – the Highway 427 Expansion and the construction of the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital.
