City expands online art gallery
New three-part Planet Earth Series now available on Flickr
As the City of Vaughan continues to enhance its online offerings in response to COVID-19, new collections have been added to the digital corporate art gallery. Citizens are now invited to take a virtual tour of the popular PLANET EARTH SERIES: Treescapes, Waterscapes and Earthscapes exhibitions on Flickr.
The curated series, which was previously on display at Vaughan City Hall, is comprised of three instalments, profiling three local and regional artists. They include:
PLANET EARTH SERIES: Treescapes
Treescapes is the first visual art instalment in the PLANET EARTH SERIES. Captured by award-winning Vaughan photographer Amanda Arcuri, her photographs transform trees into theatrical compositions. The experimental style of her work offers a picturesque glimpse of nature that is both familiar and surreal. Many ravine and forest locations featured in this exhibition are found near the artist’s Maple home. Her treescapes are meant to remind us that our environment is precious and that we all share a role in ecological conservation.
PLANET EARTH SERIES: Waterscapes
Waterscapes is the second art instalment in the PLANET EARTH SERIES. Works in this exhibition are inspired by classical music in concert with nature and the element of water. Painted by regional artist Ernestine Tahedl, a member of the Royal Canadian Academy and Ontario Society of Artists, a variety of media and subject matter are employed to illuminate tranquil waterscapes through the manipulation of colour and light. Her work celebrates the beauty of our environment but also draws awareness to the importance of saving our planet for generations to come.
PLANET EARTH SERIES: Earthscapes
Earthscapes is the final instalment in the PLANET EARTH SERIES. Painted by Vaughan-based artist Lisa Johnson, the exhibition features abstract depictions of Ontario landscapes inspired by on-location studies. These earthscapes are dramatic and emotional painterly responses that suggest the power and mystery of nature. Works were created in tribute to our planet and to remind us that it is a fragile commodity in a world of renewable resources.
40 curated works of art from the PLANET EARTH SERIES are included in three themed online galleries. These works recognize the City’s commitment to championing environmental stewardship – one of the strategic priorities in the 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan (PDF).
Curated over the past 13 years, the City launched its online gallery on April 17 to profile artistic excellence, inspire emerging and established talent, embrace equality and diversity, and foster art appreciation. The City’s own Corporate Art Collection houses 78 permanent acquisitions of art, including several works from the PLANET EARTH SERIES that profile an eclectic range of subject matter, art media, technique and style that includes painting, photography, mixed-media and digital imagery.
A personal Flickr account is not required to access the City’s online gallery. More information is also available at vaughan.ca/art.
