City Of Vaughan Donates $10,000 To The Haifa Emergency Relief Effort

The City of Vaughan is supporting relief efforts in the City of Haifa, Israel following a major wildfire in the Carmel Forest. Council has approved a donation of $10,000 to the Haifa Foundation Emergency Appeal through The Canadian Committee for the Haifa Foundation, a registered Canadian charity.

“We have a very caring community here in Vaughan and our spirit of generosity defines us,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “The City has a proud history of providing humanitarian relief in times of crisis, both here at home and around the world. In solidarity with our large Jewish community, we offer our support to the relatives and friends of those affected by this devastating forest fire.”
The fire has covered more than 12,000 acres, displacing 17,000 people. The estimated damage is $1 billion.

The funds raised by The Canadian Committee for the Haifa Foundation will be used to purchase hygiene kits for evacuated families, bedding, communication equipment, and fire brigade equipment.

In recent years, the City of Vaughan has supported relief efforts following international disasters. The City made charitable contributions following earthquakes in China in 2008, Italy in 2009 and Haiti in 2010, a typhoon in the Philippines in 2009, and floods in Pakistan earlier this year.

The City of Vaughan has had an International Partnership Agreement with Ramla, Israel since 1993. For more information on the Haifa relief effort, visit www.haifa-foundation.org.
