Showcasing notable 2021 awarded properties and gardening tips for next year

Vaughan is home to many green thumbs – especially in 2021! With a record number of 1,042 nominations submitted this year, the City’s annual Curb Appeal Program was a success. Nominees were visited by community volunteers to evaluate their properties, and a total of 750 recognized properties received a Curb Appeal sign on their lawn as an award for their dedication to beautification.

Each year, the team of judges seeks award-worthy properties based on criteria involving creativity, use of colour and texture varieties, use of drought-resistant plants and more.

The 2021 Curb Appeal judges consisted of five new gardening enthusiasts and 25 committed, returning individuals – including one who started in 2010!

The Curb Appeal Program is an important part of Vaughan’s beautification mandate as it recognizes homeowners and businesses who demonstrate exceptional pride and effort in maintaining their properties. If you are new to gardening or lawn care and want your property to stand out next year, the City is here to help with the following tips:

  • Ensure your grass is cut neatly and is free of weeds. To help it grow thick and healthy, add topsoil and seed and water for long periods infrequently instead of short periods often.
  • Purchase mulch in a variety of colours to make your garden stand out. Not only does it keep soil healthy, but mulch also holds moisture and nutrients, which will help to stop weed growth.
  • Incorporate a variety of plants and flowers in your garden. Perennials such as Bee Balms, Russian Sages, Begonias and Black-eyed Susans are low-maintenance and pollinators love them. Annuals like Coleuses and Angelonia are a great way to add height and bright colours to your arrangement.
  • Consider adding different colour and size stones or rocks and illumination or water features, such as lamps or a small fountain, to your garden for originality.
