The City of Vaughan remembers Keira Kagan
Vaughan City Hall illuminated in purple to honour her life
This evening, the City of Vaughan has illuminated City Hall in purple in memory of four-year-old Thornhill resident Keira Kagan. Today marked the one-year anniversary of her passing on Feb. 9, 2020.
To honour the life and legacy of Keira, the colour purple was chosen because it symbolizes the courage of women and girls who face gender-based violence and domestic abuse. Ward 4 Councillor Sandra Yeung Racco brought forward a Member’s Resolution to the Committee of the Whole (2) meeting on Jan. 25, 2021 requesting the City remember Keira in a meaningful way.
On Dec. 6, 2020, the City of Vaughan proclaimed the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women. Each year, this day is dedicated to remembering individuals who have experienced gender-based violence. Residents can collectively help prevent and address gender-based violence by reflecting on and learning from the past, listening to survivors, and speaking up against harmful behaviour.
As the City of Vaughan continues to respond to the global COVID-19 pandemic and provincial stay-at-home order, residents are encouraged to mark this solemn day from home.
QUOTES
“Today, the City of Vaughan honours the life and legacy of Keira Kagan. Her passing was felt deeply by all citizens and, as we mark the one-year anniversary, our thoughts and prayers are with Keira’s mother Jennifer, and her stepfather, Philip, for their unimaginable loss. In lighting Vaughan City Hall purple this evening, we pay tribute to Keira and pledge never to forget the joy she brought to her family and community. Together, we will continue to advocate for the elimination of violence against girls and women and work to ensure Vaughan remains a safe place for all. May Keira rest in peace, and may her light continue to shine bright.”
